What’s Your Story?

National Writing Day – What’s Your Story? 📚
Every year on 25th June, the brilliant team at the National Literacy Trust invites us all to pause, put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), and celebrate National Writing Day, offering a chance to champion creativity, wellbeing, connection, and the magic that happens when we let our imaginations run wild.
But here’s the plot twist…
A recent 2024 study found that:
- Less than 3 in 10 young people say they enjoy writing in their free time – the lowest levels ever recorded.
- Only 1 in 9 write daily outside of school – half as many as last year.
- The good news? Enjoyment of writing at school is on the up, with over 53% of students saying they like it – a 22% rise from last year!
At Boosters, we LOVE a celebration (and an excuse to talk books, obviously). So, in honour of National Writing Day, we asked the team to share their favourite reads. Here’s what they said:
Vicky Hanks – How to Kill Your Family
“A great read — can’t say too much or I’ll spoil it!”
Craig Harrison – The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
“Powerful, emotive, unforgettable. A must-read.”
Roy Rogers – The Shining
“Started it in the 70s. Still can’t forget it. (No, not the 1870s!)”
Donna Lee – It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
“Started on holiday and didn’t speak to my husband the whole flight. He didn’t seem to mind!”
Stacey Bray-Lawrence – The Tattooist of Auschwitz
“Raw, emotional, and beautifully told.”
Chris Hicklin – Hell’s Angels by Hunter S. Thompson
“Motorbikes, mayhem and immersive journalism – what’s not to love?”
Whether it’s a to-do list, a love letter, a poem, or a wild new story idea, writing doesn’t need to be perfect – just personal. Who knows? The next Narnia, Hogwarts or Panem could start with your scribbles.
So today, why not pick up a pen and see where it takes you? And don’t forget to encourage the young people in your life to do the same – their words matter.
